The 7th symposium on Limnology and Aquatic birds

Why a symposium on Limnology and aquatic birds?

Aquatic birds are often studied from a terrestrial perspective despite the fact that they spend much of their lives on or in water. They have been largely ignored by limnologists even though they can potentially have strong effects on limnological systems. Similarly, scientists studying birds are often not very familiar with aquatic systems even when limnological processes have momentous effects on the study species. It is therefore important to unite these fields of science for a better understanding of waterbird ecology and their possible impacts on surrounding ecosystems.

Backgound

During the International Congress on Munich, Germany in 1989, it became apparent to a small group of participants that the time had come for waterbirds to be treated in a limnological context. This triggered the first Symposium on limnology and aquatic birds, "Aquatic birds in the trophic web of lakes" held in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada in 1991. The symposium was a success and led to the formation of the Working Group on Aquatic Birds of Societas Internationalis Limnologiae (SIL). A number of conferences have followed since the group was formed.
