The 7th symposium on Limnology and
Aquatic birds

Symposium field trips
Kristianstad is located in a lowland agricultural region, and it is
surrounded by wetlands and frequently flooded farmland. During the last day of
the symposium, we will take a boat trip around the wetlands surrounding the town.
Although Kristianstad is in a lowland agricultural area with many eutrophic
wetlands, it is very near the boreal with its typical oligotrophic lakes and
mires.
Symposium field trips:
Day 1: The first day will be allocated to the agricultural lowlands,
where we will visit lakes favoured by many aquatic bird species. We will travel
south where the land is fertile and has historically been heavily cultivated to
which the many castles can testify. We will make our way to the south
westernmost tip of the country where many migrating birds
arrive in the spring and which is the region where they are last seen before
they leave for the continent in the autumn.
Day 2: On the second day we venture north into the boreal forests.
These wetlands and lakes are generally not very productive do not have as many
birds, but are much more representative for Scandinavia. There are more than 100
000 lakes in Sweden, and most are oligotrophic. There are also other types of
wetlands, such as large swamps and mires.
